The Mansion Murders of Byrd and Melanie Billings

Ashley Markham, 26, one of the daughters of Melanie Billings from her first marriage, announced that she and her husband would be taking over the care of the children. She appeared on Oprah to talk about her family's legacy. The financial burden of running a 13-person household appeared to be larger than Markham anticipated. "Ashley has, of course, has been thrust into her parent's financial circumstances. The situation with the estate has changed a little bit. These people were perceived as being very wealthy, now they are realizing they didn't have a will, didn't have life insurance," family attorney Robert Beasley told Fox 10 News in Pensacola.

After the murders, Markham told the press that she would continue in her parents' footsteps.

She said at a press conference: "My mother and father touched many, many lives around the country and we plan to carry on their legacy. We children have experienced a loss that is unimaginable, but as a family we'll pull together. We'll take each day one day at a time. Our most important concern right now is upholding the wishes of my parents. And we are fully prepared to do that. The family is capable of following through with those wishes."
